Boredom is an emotional state.........nothing to do, with no interests in your surroundings that are dull, tedious, and lack stimulation. There is an inherent anxiety that causes one to feel this way and can lead to unpleasant suffering like a weight that must be endured. And so it can be literally painful, causing you to feel angry or frustrated.
It seems those that are bored tend to daydream. Perhaps this may be a better use of time provided your mind is creative enough to generate ideas. This may be the best use of time that has to be passed. At least this way, your time is useful. However, boredom can influence your actions negatively causing you to make impulsive and hasty decisions. Take for example day traders. They can enter into "over-trading" without being objective and make very unwise decisions simply because they are bored. And some people who get into trouble because they have nothing better to do? At best, boredom can lead to creative ideas that spark innovation and at worse, boredom can lead to impulsive actions that serve no real purpose that result in damage to one's self interest.
So the question is this. What do YOU do to alleviate boredom? Do you use your time wisely or do you flake it away in mindless pursuits?
